7 Ways to Get Out Of A Mental Funk

Everyone struggles differently. During stressful times, some people eat too much ice cream and some people can't eat at all because they're too nauseous. Whether you're either or one of those types of individuals, we all could benefit from taking the time to care for ourselves when we are going through a mental funk.

Go Outside

This sounds simple and that is because it is. Find a place outdoors that brings you peace whether it’s the beach, a nice bench at the park, a long hike, or my personal favorite, a pretty sunset. You're free to enjoy the great outdoors in whatever way you want but I recommend bringing a book and or journal to soak up the time. Most of all, be present.

Phone a Friend

Now I know, not everyone has a ton of friends to call up and chit-chat with. My go-to person would actually be my mom but she is dead so I have had to improvise. This phone call can be to anyone at all that you haven't chatted with in a while, just check-in. If you really don't have someone to call, record a message for your future self. Taking this time to say something to someone will help keep your mind occupied.

Find a New Hobby

I am the kind of person that tries everything a little but has no one actual hobby. It's fun to learn new things and even create something new. I love to crochet or play my guitar. Things like embroidery, baking, or painting are great things to learn and you also get something beautiful out of the activity.

Listen to a Podcast

Personally, true crime and murder mystery podcasts are my favorite! Nothing distracts me from my personal life like a juicy unsolved mystery. Eventually, when I get freaked out enough I switch over to my uplifting favorite, How To Be a Better Human. Go for a walk and pop in some headphones to listen to something better than your own thoughts.

Get Up & Move

I'm not saying to go to the gym and pump out your hardest workout. However, working out in any form does tire out your body and make you feel more accomplished. Activities like rollerblading, swimming, walks, or biking are excellent ways to get your blood flowing.

Refresh Your Spacemakes

We all know what a depression room looks like. Go pick up all the empty bottles and trash from your nightstand. Throw your clothes in the laundry. Maybe get dressed and go get yourself a little something to spruce up your living space. A new candle, a plant, a throw blanket, or maybe a cool lamp. Whatever you feel drawn to, allow it to create a fresh start to your positive day.

Refresh Yourself

A hot shower truly washes a day’s worth of stress off for me. Take the time to be intentional with caring for yourself. Take an extra long bath with a candle lit and a good book. Treat yourself to a little shopping spree. Write down what you're grateful for. Paint your nails and wash your face. Remember who you are and what makes you feel most you.
